As I tip toed on to the white, shiny, frisky snow, I took a look at what we call today the coldest place on the planet: Antarctica. My name is Jerome and I am a explorer of all living animals. I have been in South America to examine snakes, traveled to japan to experience pandas and much more. But i am here now to see the species we call penguins. They are truly marvelous creatures and they are the only animals that live here thats a bird. Although they can’t fly they are still capable of amazing abilities such as fast swimming, great hunting skills and fast reflexes. But that is only my background knowledge. I am now going to study the Emperor penguins even deeper to find out why they chose to live here and what they do that most people don't know. My research starts now.
I had to walk a few miles with my crew to find them but it was all worth it once i saw them all huddled up. I am assuming they do this to keep warmth since its 10 degrees below zero. I have to wear 4 layers of the warmest clothing just to feel at least a little warm. I could tell all these penguins were boys due to their behavior. No babies were sighted but after an hour the snow became to shorten and they began their journey to look for a mate. These birds are like marathon runners… without the running part. They walk hundreds of miles just to look for others of their kind. Sometimes when they were tired they would slide on their belly which I thought was astonishing. Sometimes it takes longer to find their mates due to the climate changing because of Global Warming. Global Warming is very visual in Antarctica. Just looking at the odd icebergs and mountains of snow, you would be able to tell its been here. Once the penguins stopped to rest I started to set up camp with my crew. We were about fifty yards away from them and it was an exhilarating experience! I couldn't wait for tomorrow, but first I need to rest. Tomorrow will be even better.
The next day I glanced outside and saw the penguins weren't in there spot which means we had to catch up to them. Although weather was very severe, the sight of Antarctica was truly beautiful. Once the gang and I caught up to the penguins we observed the birds surrounding each others for warmth. Perhaps I must of missed the penguins look for there mate because it appears there were no females in sight. It appears the mothers leave for resources while the father protects the eggs. I’m sure the females will be back in a week so I decided to set camp once more and watch the penguins take care of their business.
It was a new day, a beautiful day in fact. I sighted the penguins with oval shaped eggs tucked in there legs. It was a great view to see them all happy and it gave me a smile too. Surely the eggs will hatch in about two weeks. Till then, I might have to wait and enjoy antarctica even though i might bump into more severe weather.
A week has now passed and I was taking footage of the penguins living there life. Suddenly without any alert I saw a baby penguin peak out of one of the eggs of the proud emperor penguin. I gasped and looked at the cute squinty eyed baby taking his first look at home. It looked very weak and sore until the father fed the baby with its regurgitation. Although it was little disturbing for myself, I can't help it, its just nature. As days went by fast I could tell the babies were growing and getting ready to step on the cold frisky floor of white. The babies were making friends fast and often traveled together with at least one adult around. They were fast learners and cute and cuddly. And surely they’ll be able to travel on their own in a month or so. Although this sounds amazing and everything a penguin needs, I saw the penguins face some sacrifices. Many died from starvation or predators such as birds or seals. It wasn't fun to watch them die right in front of my eyes but it had to be done. On a good side, I could tell the bad danger was fading away as spring was coming around the corner. Its been 4 months of a never ending journey, this is only the beginning for me and the penguins.
It was the best day for sure to be in antarctica. The penguins were playing, the sun was shining and the environment such as snowy mountains and icebergs were melting while swimming through the cold water. Spring has finally sprung (even though theres no flowers). The baby penguins that aren't really babies anymore appear to be saying their last goodbyes to their family. The cycle was almost at a full circle and the penguins began their first journey on their own. These penguins are such amazing animals. I have mastered all knowledge about them and this has been one of the best adventures yet. My name is Jerome and I am an animal explorer.
